For this week’s Blog, I wanted to highlight a content creator that I thought was doing a particularly great job at both putting out interesting, engaging content and marketing their own personal brand. But beyond just giving them a pat on the back, I wanted to look at why exactly their content works, and see if there’s something we can learn and apply to our own content.
Creator: Ben Deen (https://www.youtube.com/c/BenDeen1/videos)
Right off the bat, I’m struck by just how simple Ben’s videos are. His production is ultra bare bones: most shots are just a close up of Ben speaking to camera in front of the food he’s about to eat or prepare. It really goes to show you that you don’t need a ton of fancy equipment to make good content – just a good light source, a microphone, and your phone.
One thing that separates Ben from other content creators is his energy. He has a great, soft-spoken, even-keeled delivery that’s very soothing and pleasing to listen to. While a lot of YouTubers can be ultra high energy and almost manic in their delivery, Ben forgoes all that and speaks very casually, like you’re having an intimate conversation with him. What he lacks in showmanship, he more than makes up for in confidence and authenticity. Too often, people will use volume as a substitute for energy, but Ben Deen shows that you don’t have to sound like a carnival barker all the time to be engaging.
As for the content itself, Ben essentially takes outlandish food, like raw beef burgers, the Korean version of the McDonald’s McRib, and eats them, reviewing them as he eats. While I’m sure some people find eating on camera unappealing, I personally find Ben’s content to be visceral and tactile, making you feel each satisfying bite he takes without tipping too far into the gross out territory. He perfectly captures the feeling of eating a really great meal. It makes me hungry just watching it!
The biggest takeaway from Ben’s videos is that it’s not complicated to make content. It may not be easy, but it’s simple – all you need is an idea and some basic video production equipment and you’re good to go. If he can do this, you can do this, too!
